Q

Define Characteristics

A

There are 8 characteristics that classify a living thing. You can also use the 8 characteristics to separate all living things in the levels of classification.

Q

The 8 Characteristics

A

Cells , DNA, Energy, react, excrete maintain homeostasis, reproduce, movement, and sensitivity, grow and develop

18
Q

Who is Redi and why is he important?

A

Redi helped prove that the spontaneous generation method is wrong. Redi did a controlled experiment where he put 2 pieces of meat in different jars and put a lid on only 1. He was testing the theory that maggots grew out of meat. At the end he discovered that the flies had laid eggs in the jar that had no cap.

19
Q

Sensitivity

A

The ability of an organism to respond to external stimuli

20
Q

Respiration

21
Q

Who is Pasteur, and what did he do?

A

Pasteur tested the spontaneous generation method. So, he did a controlled experiment. He wanted to test the idea that bacteria does not arise from broth. He put clear broth into flasks with long necks, then he broke one of the necks off of one, and finally he saw that no bacteria had grown from the broth with the long neck that remained, and he saw that bacteria collected in the open flask with no neck.

22
Q

What is Archaea Bacteria

A

They are single-celled microorganisms with structure similar to bacteria

23
Q

What is Eubacteria

A

A single cell lacking a nucleus and containing DNA

24
Q

What is Eukarya

A

A domain that is made up of organisms that contain a nucleus within their cells

25
What is Fungi
A plant-like organism that does not make chlorophyll EX: mushroom Chlorophyll: a pigment that gives plants their green color
26
What is Animalia
One of the basic groups of living things that comprises either all the animals or all the multicellular animals EX: humans
27
What is Plantae
The taxonomic kingdom comprising all living or extinct plants EX: moss
28
What is Protista
Simple eukaryotic organisms that are neither plants nor animals or fungi. EX: algae Eukaryotic: organisms that contain a nucleus within their cells
29
What is Domain
The highest taxonomic rank of all organisms together.
30
What is Kingdom
The second highest taxonomic rank, just below domain. Kingdoms are divided into smaller groups called phyla.
31
What is an Independent Variable (x-axis)
It is a variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure. (the variable you change)
32
What is a Dependent Variable (y-axis)
What you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the experiment (the variable you are measuring)
33
What is a Control Variable
Any variable that's held constant in a research study (the variable you do not change)
34
What is a cell wall?
The outermost layer of cells in plants, bacteria, fungi, and many algae that gives shape to the cell and protects it from infection
35
What is energy
Energy is the ability to do work and a very important part of how we live
36
What is Taxonomy
the scientific study of naming, defining and classifying groups of biological organisms based on shared characteristics.
37
What is a bar graph and what is it used for
A bar graph is a graphical representation of information
38
Difference between Non - Living and Living
Living Non-Living Breath Do not breath Move Do not move Eat Do not eat Grow Do not grow Reproduce Do not reproduce Use energy Do not use energy
39
Give an example of a stimuli and a response
When it is cold, you shiver, now think of another one
40
Do you know how to use a dichotomous key
Yes.
41
How do you get an average?
Add up all of the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are.
42
How to draw a bar graph
Put the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis.
