unit 2 Flashcards
cone 06, relief sculpture, clay body
cone 06- 1800f bisque fire temp
relief scuplt- 3 d diesign on flat surface
clay body- specific clay mixture
primary ingredients in clay and characteristics effect
Alumina- plasticity
silica- vitrifies to look like rock
water- holds particles in suspension
iron, grog, ball clay
iron for color and flux
ball clay for plasticity
grog for less plasticity
stages of clay characteristics
1) slip, can be poured, slip casting
2) slurry cannot be poured, sticky
3) plastic, not sticky, knead liike dough
4) leather cannot be kneaded, can add clay
5) greenware cant add claywill disolve in water
6) bisque, will not disolve in water, pourous
7) mature not pourous, sculpture
stages of clay
slip, slurry, plastic, leather, greenware, bisque, mature
uses for 7 stages
slip- add colour
slurry- texture
plastic- handbuilding
leather-releif sculpture
greenware- ready to fire
bisque- baking dish
mature- bricks an tiles
kaolin, soda asg, fiber
kaolin- lighten color
soda sh- deflocculant, add fluitity
fiber- add strength, reduce weight
raw clay, suspension, synthetic
raw clay- clay powder, unglazed
suspension- suspended in fluid
synthetic- artificial
flux, oxide, deflocculant
flux- lowers melting temps
oxide- added to clay to change characteristics like color
deflocculant- increases fluidity
