Unit 2 Flashcards
Function of heart:
Pump blood and oxygen around the body
Function of lungs
They bring oxygen into our bodies (called inspiration, or inhalation) and send carbon dioxide out (called expiration, or exhalation). (Gas exchange)
Function of the liver
It filters the blood in the body and breaks down poisonous substances (alcohol + drugs)
Function of the pancreas
2 roles
- Organ of digestive system
- Endocrine system
Exocrine pancreas produces enzymes to help digest food
Endocrine pancreas makes hormones insulin, help control blood sugar levels
Function of the spleen
Controls level of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets
Function of the kidney
Filter blood
Remove waste
Balance body fluids
Function of large intestines
Absorb water and electrolytes
Produce and absorb vitamins
Forming and propelling feces towards rectum to be eliminated
Function of the small intestine
Break down food
Absorb nutrients that the body needs
Excrete unnecessary components
Function of the stomach
Takes in food from the food pipe, mixes and begins to break it down
Function of the gall bladder
Stores and concentrates bile from liver, than it is released into first section of small intestine
Function of the esophogus

Function of the tranchea
Allow passage of inspired and expired air in and out of the lungs
Function of the diaphragm
Muscle that helps inhale and exhale/breath in and out
Function of the urinary bladder
Serves as a reservoir for urine before it leaves the body
Function of the ureter
Transport/carries urine from the renal pelvis/kidneys to the bladder
Function of the adrenal gland
Produce hormones to help regulate metabolism, blood pressure, immune system, and other essential functions
Function of abdominal aorta
Gives off a number of branches, which end up supplying blood to stomach, spleen, intestines, and pancreas
What is the tibia
Bigger bone located in shins
Function of inferior vena cava
Transport of almost all venous blood(deoxygenated) from the lower body regions to the right atrium
What is the clavicle/location
Bone thats runs from one shoulder to the other
What is the clavicle/location
Sabine the runs from one shoulder to the other
What is the mandible/Location
The jaw bone
What is the mandible/Location
The jaw bone
Function of the vertebrae
Protect the spinal cord
What are sesamoid bones?
Small bones that form in the tendons (E.G) Patella
Function of the spinal cord
Receive sensory information from the body ( via the peripheral nervous system) and send these messages to the brain for processing.
Function of brain cerebellum
Controls balance for walking and standing, and other complex motor functions
Function of the cerebral cortex
Essential functions like memory, thinking, learning, problem solving, emotions etc
