Unit 2 Flashcards
WAN
Wide area network (covers a very large geographical area)
LAN
Local area network (covers small area such as a building)
MAN
Metropolitan area network (covers more area than LAN but less than WAN eg. A university campus
Hub
Hardware used to connect together a number of devices to form a LAN that directs incoming data packets to all devices on a network
Switch
Hardware used to connect together a number of devices to form a LAN that directs incoming data packets to a specific address only.
Router
Device that allows data to routed between different networks
Client-Server
network that uses separate dedicated servers and specific client workstations. all client computers are connect to the dedicated servers.
peer to peer
Netwrok in which each node can share files with other nodes, each node has its owndata and there is no central server
Thin client
A device that needs acess to the internet for it to work and depends on a more powerful computer for processing
Thick client
A device which can work offline and can process data locally
bus topology
all devices are connect to a single cable where data is transferred in one direction one at a time
star topology
network that uses a central hub/switch that all devices are connected to by a cable
mesh topology
interlinked devices, all devices have a connect to all other device on the network and uses routing logical to send packets in the fastest possible way
hybrid network
network made up of combinations of different topologies
cloud storage
method of data storage where data is stored on offsite servers
