Cultural contact
The interaction of diverse cultures and perspectives, which may result in changes in values, beliefs and traditions.
Depopulation
The reduction of a population because of conflict, diseases, loss of resources, cultural change or assimilation.
Displacement
The involuntary dispersal of a people, especially from their homeland.
Legacy
The impact of particular events or actions.
Silk road
A network of trade routes connecting civilizations in the East and West.
Mercantilism
A system of government sponsored international business ventures designed to make European monarchs rich.
Capitalism
An economic system designed for increasing individual wealth.
Communism
A planned economic system in which government owns all means of production and all people work for government run or owned enterprises.
Industrialization
Economic development that occurs when production shifts to large factories.
Imperialism
When a country extends its power into other territories for economic or political gain.
Colony
A territory that belonged to a European country.
Protectorate
An area that maintained its own sovereignty but was guided by a European country.
Sphere of influence
An economic agreement in which a European country owned exclusive trade and investment rights in a region of the Americas, Asia or Africa.
“White mans burden”
A way to justify colonialism by saying that it was the responsibility of white men to ‘civilize’ non-white peoples.
