Unit 2 Flashcards
Atom
The smallest piece of an element, no charge/neutral
Proton
+ charge, in nucleus, identifies the element, part of mass
Neutron
0 charge, in nucleus, part of mass, change creates isotopes
Electron
- charge, in energy level/rings, change creates ions
Nucleus
Center of atom, contains p+ & n0, mass of atom
Atomic Number
Number of p+, top number in P.T, bottom number in nuclear symbol
Average Atomic Mass
Average of all isotopes of an element, decimal bottom number in P.T
Mass Number
p+ and n0, rounded average from P.T, top # in nuclear symbol
Ion
Atom with + or - charge, more (-) or less (+) e-
Isotope
Same element w/diff number if n0 and different mass
How to find the mass # of an atom
p+ + n0, round decimal in P.T
How to find the charge on an ion
p+ - e-
Energy Level
“Rings” around nucleus where e- are (2,8,18)
Photon
“Packet” of energy given off by e- as light
Color= Visible spectrum, ROYGBIV, caused by:
e- jumping and falling from excited state back to ground state and releasing energy (photons)
