Unit 2 Flashcards
Food Production
Agricultural production - Processing - Distribution - Seller (Grocery Store) - Consumer
Farm
All foods, in some form OR another, begin on a farm
Food Processor
Where foods will be cleaned + sorted in prep. for shipping
Or will be processed using heat, sugar…
Distributer
Responsible for transporting food
Seller
Location where food can be purchased
Growing oats
Oats can tolerate all kinds of weather
Safety: Oats need to be tested for am. of moisture (make sure no mold can grow)
Organic Farming
grow crops + raise livestock in ways that are sustainable + harmonious w/environment
Soil Management
over the years, precious topsoil eroded into ditches + waterways.
Today farmers are working on improving the land.
Horticulture
Science + art of growing fruits + veggies, flowers…
Aquaculture (Aquatic organisms)
Farming… tanks, ponds, lakes, oceans
Water management
Protecting water is essential for sustainable agriculture
Animal Breeding
Pure breeds + cross-breeds
*diff. breeds, diff. reasons
Fish Consumption
Restrict consumption of shark, swordfish, fresh or frozen tuna, etc…
*Restrict for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women
Methyl Mercury (CH2Hg)
Can be highly toxic, in fish
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
Harmful effects on humans
Protect crops
- pesticides: herbicide, fungicide, insecticide
- climate: smart agriculture = help change environ.
- A global climate services for farmers
Organic farming
farming w/out use of certain pesticides, fertilizers, antibodies growth hormones, genetically modified organisms
Principles of Organic Farming
- Health - enhance health of soil, plants, animals, humans, planet as one
- Ecology - based on living ecological systems + cycles, work w/them (help sustain them)
- Fairness - build on relationships that ensure fairness w/regard to common environ. + life opportunities
- Care - precautionary + responsible manner to protect health + well being of current + future generations + environ.
Organic Farming
= promote sustainability
- covering crops
- using renewable resources
producers may not claim products are organic if they have been irradiated, genetically engineered, grown w/certain fertilizers
*70-95% organic ingredients = make labelling claims about organic ingredients, BUT cannot use logo
*Logo = 95%
Organic produce
- can be higher in vit. C + phytochemicals
- protecting themselves against pests, insects…
- produces + releases phytochemicals
DNA
Molecule of life
GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms)
insertion of DNA from 1 organism into another OR modification of an organism’s DNA in order to achieve a desired trait
Cross-breeding
- grow better/more using less water, space
- better nutritional +/sensory qualities
- better disease resistant
Genetic Engineering
Take a specific gene from 1 cell + insert at a specific cite into DNA of another cell
*within species - 1 wheat variety to another
*between - from bacteria to plant cells
Development of Golden Rice
Inserting BETA-CAROTENE gene from plants into rice
BETA-CAROTENE = Vitamin A
GMO-BT-Corn
Transgenic organism that has a gene from a bacterium (bacillus thuringiensis) inserted into corn
