Unit 2 Flashcards
Ecosystem diversity
the number of different habitats that are available in a given area.
Enables wide diveiry of plants and animals due to the difffrent ecosystem conditions.
Species diversity
is the number of different species in an ecosystem and the balance or evenness of the population sizes of all spices in the ecosystem.
Genetic diveirsuty
how different the genes are of individuals within a population (group of the same species)
Genetic diveirsuty
full
measure of how different the genomes(set of genes) are of the individuals within a population of a given species
There is genetic diversity in all pops. because random mutations in the copying of DNA & recombination of chromosomes in the sex cells of parents lead to new gene combinations & new traits in offspring More genetic diversity in a pop the better the pop can respond to env stressors. The more gen dib the higher the chance that some have traits that allow them to survive.
All popualations have some degree of mutations, some have a higher than other.
Richness(r)
is just the total number of different species found in an ecosystem. generally a good sign of ecosystem health (more species means more quality resources)
Evenness
measure of how all of the individual organisms in an ecosystem are balanced between the different species
Evenness indicates if there are one or two dominant species, or if pop. sizes are well-balanced
Bottleneck Event
An environmental disturbance (natural disaster) that drastically reduces population size and kills organisms regardless of their genome
Not natral sellction but disator
Surviving population is smaller and because indivildas died randomly it doesn’t represent the genetic diversity of thge original population.
Inbreeding Depression
Inbreeding is when organism mate with closey related family memebrs.
Leads to higher chance of offspring having harmful genetic mutations becasue they are getting similar genotypes from both parents.
Smaller populations are more licly to experiecne inbreeding difficult to fin non related mate.
Ecosystem Resilience
the ability of an ecosystem to return to its original conditions after a major disturbance
Higher species diversity = higher ecosystem resilience High sp. div means more plant species to repopulate disturbed ground,
