Unit 2 Flashcards
chromosomes
a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes. There are sex chromosomes and autosomes
CODIS
a computer software program that operates local, state, and national databases of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons. Automated Tags.
core fingerprints
A structure in the print that is the center line or lines of the print; it is important for conducting ridge counts.
dactylography
The science of using fingerprints to uniquely identify people.
Delta prints
A triangular type formation in the friction ridge flow, where ridges. flowing in the different directions meet.
DNA
the molecule of life and contains the genetic instructions in the development of all living organisms.
DNA analysis
DNA profiling is the determination of a DNA profile for legal and investigative purposes.
DNA fingerprinting
a laboratory technique used to determine the probable identity of a person based on the nucleotide sequences of certain regions of human DNA that are unique to individuals.
DNA profile
a forensic technique in criminal investigations, comparing criminal suspects’ profiles to DNA evidence so as to assess the likelihood of their involvement in the crime
electrophoresis
s a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA or protein molecules based on their size and electrical charge.
follicular tag
s tissue from a hair follicle that is still attached to the root end of a hair.
hair shaft including its parts
the cuticle, the cortex, and sometimes the medulla. The cuticle is the outermost layer. Made of flattened cells that overlap like the tiles on a terra-cotta roof, the cuticle protects the inside of the hair shaft from damage.
IAFIS
an electronic database that contains electronic fingerprint records from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies across the country.
latent prints
an impression of the friction skin of the fingers or palms of the hands that has been transferred to another surface.
LDIS
the local portion of the national DNA database called the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
NDIS
provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills
minutiae
the small, precise, or trivial details of something.
natural fibers
seed hairs, such as cotton; stem (or bast) fibres, such as flax and hemp;leaf fibres, such as sisal; and husk fibres, such as coconut.
neutron activation analysis
an analytical technique that relies on the measurement of gamma rays emitted from a sample that was irradiated by neutrons.
macroscopic
visible to the naked eye; not microscopic.
patent print
what’s left when you have liquid on your fingers—ink or blood, for example—and touch a smooth surface
plastic print
impressions made when you touch something soft and malleable like wax or fresh paint.
SDIS
State DNA Index System which is located at the Forensic Investigative Center in Albany, NY. 2 NDIS stands for the National DNA Index System which is located at the FBI laboratory.
synthetic fibers
produced by joining chemical monomers into polymers using a chemical reaction called polymerisation.
