UNIT 2 Flashcards
Genetic Biodiversity
DNA differences between individuals in a species; high diversity rate——> higher survival rate against disruptions/bottlenecks
Species Biodiversity
a measure of the # od diff. species in an area: the larger the #, the more likely an ecosystem survives disasters
Habitat Biodiversity
of diff. types of habitats for organisms to live
Ecosystem Services
- Provisioning
- Supporting
- Regulating
- Cultural
Adaptation
when an organism changes in response to its environment
Ecological Tolerance
range of conditions that an organism can endure before injury or death; can apply to individual or whole species
- temperature
- salinity
- flow rate
- sunlight
Periodic Disruption
disruptions that occur at certain predictable times
EX: hurricane season or summer beetle invasion
Episodic Disruption
long periods of change
EX: continental drift or glacial movement
Random Disruption
unpredictable event
EX: volcano eruption or earthquake
Succession
changes and re-growth that occur after a disturbance
Pioneer Species
first ones that come back first to an environment
EX: grass, mold, lichens)
Climax Community
END result of a succession (plants, animals, and fungi); can be different from original community
Primary Succession
a disturbance ——> NO SOIL or vegetation to remain
Secondary Succession
a disturbance SOIL and vegetation STILL REMAINS
