Unit 2 Flashcards
What are the 5 divisions of the spinal cord?
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
- Sacrum
- Coccyx
What kind of curve is the cervical and lumbar?
Lordotic Curve
What kind of curve is the thoracic and sacral?
Kyphotic Curve
Does the lordotic curve more anterior or posterior?
What about the kyphotic curve?
Lordotic curve = anteriorly
Kyphotic curve = posteriorly
The vertebrae consist of what 2 parts?
- Body
- Vertebral Arch
The vertebral arch is made up of 4 parts. What are they?
- Pedicle
- Lamina
- Transverse Process
- Spinous Process
How many articular processes are there on the vertebral arch?
Four
The first two cervical vertebrae are atypical in that they are structurally modified to join the skull. What is the name of these two cervical vertebrae?
Atlas (C1) & Axis (C2)
What are the 4 divisions in the spine?
What are the curvatures in the spine?
Label where each of the 4 divisions are and what each curve is.
Name the landmarks of the cervical.

- Squamosal
What are fontanels?
- Areas that haven’t ossified - soft spots
- Present at birth
- Gradually replaced by bone
- Allow for skull compression during birth
What is the Calvarium composed of?
Composed of frontal bone, occipital bone, and 2 parietals bones
What is the floor of the cranium?
What is it composed of?
- Area where the brain rests
- Composed of ethmoid bone, sphenoid bone, occipital bone and 2 temporals bone
What is the frontal bone?
It is the anterior portion of the cranium
What does the parietal bones form?
Form sides & roofs
What does the occipital bone form?
Forms posterior wall and part of the cranial floor
What does the temporal bones form?
Forms a portion of lateral wall and mid floor of cranial vault
Where is the ethmoid bone located?
Between orbits
