Federalism
govt. system that shares power with the national govt.
Enumerated Powers
specific powers are given to the federal govt. by the constitution
Commerce Clause
Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce
Necessary & Proper Clause
allows Congress to make the necessary laws to execute other powers
Supremacy Clause
prohibits the states from interfering with the federal govts. work of its constitutional powers
Tenth Amendment
balance of power between the federal govt. & the states
Reserved Powers
new govt. is limited to the powers outlined in the constitution
Concurrent Powers
powers shared by the federal govt. & state govts.
Full Faith and Credit Clause
no matter the difference in states laws, they will still be respected in other states
Privileges and Immunities Clause
prevents a state from treating citizens from other states differently
Dual Federalism
any federal system that is divided into two areas of authority & power
Selective incorporation
doctrine that claims that states can’t make laws or take away citizens constitutional rights
Categorical Grant
money issued by congress for certain use only ex: food stamps
Unfunded Mandates
a regulation that requires a state to follow certain rules with no money/benefit for following them
Block Grant
money that the federal govt. gives to states for benefits & services
