Ancient Psychology
Archeologists have found evidence of stone age human carvings and holes in skulls to release spirits/evil
Socrates
Believed that the body and mind were separated and that the minds continued after the body dies
Plato
Socrates student, had the same beliefs/idealogies
Aristotle
Suggested that the soul and body are connected and that the mind grows from experience
Empiricism
Knowledge coming from experiences
John Locke
Held the idea that the mind was a blank slate and experiences grew the mind
MONism
Body and mind are connected, they act as one (mono)
DUALism
Body and minds are separate (dual)
Rene Descartes
Believes in dualism but wondered how the mind and body communicated
STRUCTURalism
Used to study the structure of the brain
Wilhelm Wundt
The father of experimental psychology. Measured perceptual processing.
Ex. Time it takes to hit a button after hearing a bell
Edward B Titchener
Wundt’s student. Introduced structuralism
Introspection
Looking inward. To record elements of an experience as they happen
FUNCTIONalism
Studied behavior and emotions and not the unconscious
