Unit 19- Quality of hypothesis tests Flashcards
what is an error?
an error is not a mistake, an error is getting the incorrect conclusion even if you did the hypothesis test correct
Type 1 error
A type 1 error is incorrectly rejecting H0. ie. Concluding that H0 is false, when in fact it is true. - False positive
Type 2 errors
Type 2 error is incorrectly not rejecting H0 ie. Concluding that H0 is true, when in fact it is false. - False negative
Relationship between Type 1 and Type 2 errors
If you reduce the chance of a Type 1 error, you will increase t he chance of a type 2 error.
If you reduce the chance of a Type 2 error, you might increase the chance of a Type 1 error.
Reducing the risk of a type 1 error
reducing the significant level, however it will increase the risk of a Type 2 error
Reducing the risk of a Type 2 error
Increasing the significance level, however this will increase the risk of a Type 1 error. Increasing the sample size, however taking. larger sample may not be practical.
