Civil Rights Act of 1866
The federal law that prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.

Any group of people designated as such by statute in consideration of federal and state civil rights and lending legislation

A federal cabinet department active in national housing programs. Among its many programs are urban renewal, public housing, model cities, rehabilitation loans, FHA subsidies, fair housing enforcement, and water and sewer grants.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
Federal act implementing regulations that protect citizens with mental or physical disabilities. Does not apply to residential housing but to commercial facilities and places of public accommodation (Ensures access).
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Administers the Federal Fair Housing Act - handles complaints of aggrieved persons who believe they have been victims of illegal discrimination
Office of Federal Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (OFHEO)
State fair housing law containing similar prohibitions to those of the federal fair housing law. Unlike the federal law, however, the NC law does not exempt owners who are selling their own property, and it does exempt the rental of a unit in a one-unit to four-unit residential building if the owner or one of the owner’s family members lives in one of the units.
North Carolina Fair Housing Act of 1983
The state agency responsible for enforcing the North Carolina Fair Housing Act.

The illegal practice of inducing homeowners to sell their properties by making representations regarding the entry or prospective entry of persons of a particular protected class into the neighborhood.
