Alliteration
Alliteration: repetition of the initial consonants of words.
Free Verse:
Free Verse: a poem without predictable rhyme, rhythm, or length of line or stanza.
Hyperbole:
Hyperbole: excessive exaggeration to make a point
Imagery:
Imagery: the use of vivid words that appeal to the reader’s senses of sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch
Onomatopoeia:
a word that makes the sound of the action it describes
Metaphor:
: a comparison of two dissimilar things that implies some sort of equality between the things
Personification
: a comparison that gives human qualities to inanimate objects
Rhyme scheme
the pattern of the end rhymes in a poem
Speaker:
the narrator of a poem
Stanza:
a group of lines of poetry, usually similar in length and pattern
Symbol
: something in a poem that stands for something larger than itself
Simile
: a comparison of two dissimilar things that uses “like” or “as”
