Attribution theory
How we explain someone’s behavior based on their emotions, actions, the situation, or their deposition (frame of mind/personality)
Social psych
The study of how people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions are affected by others
Dispositional theory
Factors that are internal to someone/thing and aren’t seen (ie genes, mood)
Situational factors
Behavior from one situation & person to another
Fundamental attribution factor
Tendency for observes to UNDERESTIMATE the impact of the situation & OVERESTIMATE the impact of personal disposition
Spotlight effect
Overestimating others noticing & evaluating how we look, how we act, and blunders
(Narcissist-we think a spotlight is on us)
Self serving bias
Readiness to perceive oneself favorably
Central route persuasion
Attitude change in which interested people focus on arguments & respond with favorable thoughts
Peripheral route persuasion
Attitude change where people are influenced by things like if the speaker is attractive or not
Foot in the door phenomenon
People start with a small request and work it up to a larger request
Door in the face
Someone starts with a big request but then makes it smaller
Role
Set of expectations (norms) about a social position – defining how people should behave
Cognitive dissonance
We work to reduce discomfort we feel when 2 thoughts are inconsistent
(Conscience tells you 1 thing and society another)
Conformity
Going along with the rest of the group
Obedience
Following a leaders orders (authority)
Social loafing
Slacking when in a group
Social facilitation
When people do things ether with an audience
Deindividuation
One individual loses self awareness (individuality) in group situations
Group polarization
When in a group people make extreme decisions
