Unit 14 Flashcards
Which kingdoms contain human parasites?
Fungi, Anamalia, Protozoa, Chromista. (i C you FAP)
How do protozoa survive harsh environmental conditions?
Forming cysts. Trophozoites are the active “feeding” form.
How do parasites in general evade the host immune system?
Antigenic shift, host mimicry, masking (acquiring host molecules as a disguise), Intracellular location.
How do helminthes in particular avoid the host immune response?
All of the above except intracellular location. Produce enzymes like proteinases to break down defenses such as ab.

Cestodes
Tape worms. Long flat and segmented. Hooks, suckers and proglottids.
Trematodes
Fluks. Flat and nonsegmented.
Nematodes
Round worms. Large, round and non segmented.
What lab test indicates a multicellular parasite infection?
Elevated eosinophil count.
Taenia sp
Example of a cestode, or tape worm. Long, flat and segmented.
Schistosoma masoni
Example of a trematode fluke. Flat and non-segmented. Blood fluke. All have snail in life cycle. Chronic disease damages organs. Cercae penetrates skin, into circulation. Mature in liver. Adult in blood vessels produce eggs. Eggs go out in urine and go back to snail. Worm covered in self, so your immune system doesn’t see.
