Unit 14 Flashcards
What is a design process?
An approach used by designers and engineers to solve problems breaks down large problems into manageable parts
What is primary investigation?
This is gathered directly by or for the designer first hand and often from the user or user group involve questionnaires surveys interviews
Secondary investigation
Involves the use of information collected and reported by others the internet books magazines media sources
Present the data
Representing information clearly bar charts pie charts histograms and line graphs quotes in bold+ larger fonts photographs or other media can be edited
Idea generation
Process of creating and developing proposals different focus areas eg. User centred design sustainability and technological innovation
What is a Prototype?
An early model of a product something that can be learned from
What can you do to develop a prototype?
Test the different aspects, test materials, try out manufacturing methods, demonstrate function, communicate aesthetics and check ergonomics
Examples of modelling techniques
Card model, 3d model for accuracy and styrofoam model
Why do designers work collaboratively?
Results in a wider range of more complex designs, more commercially viable
Human centred design
Learning from people for example their needs, make human life easier this relies on empathy between designers and the people they are designing for
Sustainable design
It is a model of production and consumption involves sharing leasing reusing repairing refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible
Life cycle analysis
Assessing environmental impacts associated with the life cycle of a commercial product process or service
What is datum?
A surface or edge used as reference which measurements are taken from to improve accuracy
Tolerance
The acceptable upper and lower limits of accuracy of a measurement
Importance of accuracy
Level of conformity of a measurement to the required value
How can accuracy be fixed?
Using a datum
What is non-destructive testing?
evaluate the properties of materials components or system without any damage
Destructive testing
Test the conditions that a product can tolerate before being destroyed determining best materials
What is COSHH
Control of substances hazardous to health regulations reduce exposure to harmful chemicals
What is UKAS?
Stands for united kingdom accreditation service any certification body testing and calibration lab or inspection body should be UKAS accredited
What is British standards institute(bsi)
BSI produce technical standards for a range of products and services and supply certification and standards-related services to businesses globally
