Unit ! Flashcards
What is Chemistry?
The study of the composition and the chanes that matter undergoes.
The five major divisions of chemistry
1 organinc
2 inorganic
3 analytical
4 physical
5 biochemistry
Organic chemistry
study of all chemicals containing carbon
Inorganic chemistry
Study of chemicals that do not contain carbon
Analytical Chemistry
Study of the compostion of matter
Physical Chemistry
Study of mechanisms, rates, and transfer of energy that occurs when matter underoes change.
Biochemistry
The study of processes that take place in organisms.
What is matter?
Anything that had mass and occupies space.
What is mass?
The amount of stuff that a substance is made up of.
The four states of Matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Plasma
Solid
definite shape
definite volume
not easily compressed
Liquid
indefinite shape
definite volume
Not easily compressed
Gas
indefinite shape
indefinite volume
easily compressed
Atom
the smallest particle of an element that retains its identity in a chemical reaction
Molecules
When two+ atoms are chemically combind.
Elements
a substance that can not be broken down into a simpler substance by chemical or physical means
Compounds
When 2+ elements are chemically combind (can be broken down)
Observations
Information obtained by through the senses
Qualitative
Uses descriptions
Quantitative
uses numerical data
Physical changes
retains the identity of the substance
(odor, color, volume, phase, melting/boiling point, density, mass, temperature)
Chemical changes
changes the identity of the substance
