Unit 1.2 Kinematics Flashcards
What is a x-t graph?
Displacement-time graph
What does the gradient of a x-t graph represent?
The increase in displacement per second, so the gradient of a x-t graph is the velocity.
Describe the gradient of a x-t graph if it is a straight line.
Gradient is constant and so the velocity is constant.
What does an upward slope on a x-t graph represent?
An increase in x with time, so a movement in the positive x direction.
What does a downward slope on a x-t graph represent?
Moving in the negative direction.
What does a horizontal line represent on a x-t graph?
Stationary
Define mean speed.
distance travelled/ time taken
Define mean velocity.
displacement/ time taken
Define instantaneous acceleration.
It is the rate of change of velocity.
Define mean acceleration.
change in velocity/ time taken
Δv/ Δt
Give the units of acceleration.
ms⁻²
What does ‘rate of change’ mean?
Change per unit time
Give a second definition for acceleration.
Change in velocity per second
What is a v-t graph?
Velocity-time graphs
What 2 quantities can be found by a v-t graph?
- Acceleration
- Displacement
How can you find the acceleration in a v-t graph?
By working out the gradient of the v-t graph
How can you find the displacement in a v-t graph?
By working out the area between the v-t graph and t-axis.
What does x represent in suvat?
Displacement
What does u represent in suvat?
Initial velocity
What does v represent in suvat?
Final velocity
What does a represent in suvat?
Acceleration
What does t represent in suvat?
Time
Give 2 equations used in suvat to work out the velocity.
- v = u + at
- v² = u² + 2ax
Give 3 equations used in suvat to work out the displacement.
- x = 1/2 (u + v) t
- x = ut + 1/2 (at²)
- x = vt - 1/2 (at²_
What does g represent?
Acceleration of free fall or the acceleration due to gravity.
Give the value for g.
9.81 ms⁻²
What would the acceleration be if we choose upwards as positive?
a = -g = -9.81 ms⁻²
What is a projectile?
An object which is thrown/ kicked/ made to move obliquely upwards and carries on its path under the influence of gravity.
