Unit 12 Flashcards
Electric Charge
the physical property of matter that causes matter to experience a force when placed in an electromagnetic field
Electric field
the physical field that surrounds electrically charged particles and exerts force on all other charged particles in the field, either attracting or repelling them
conductor
substance or material that allows electricity to flow through it
Insulator
Any material that keeps energy such as electricity, heat, or cold from easily transferring through
Induction
a charged object is brought near but not touched to a neutral conducting object
Electric current
the rate of flow of electrons in a conductor
Voltage
the pressure from an electrical circuit’s power source that pushes charged electrons (current) through a conducting loop, enabling them to do work such as illuminating a light
Resistance
a measure of the opposition to current flow in an electrical circuit
Ohm’s Law
that the current through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the voltage across the two points
Electric Motor
a device used to convert electricity into mechanical energy
Magnetic Pole
the region at each end of a magnet where the external magnetic field is strongest
MAgnetic Domain
region in which the magnetic fields of atoms are grouped together and aligned.
Electromagnet
a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current
Electromagnetism
nteraction that occurs between particles with electric charge via electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic force is one of the four fundamental forces of nature. It is the dominant force in the interactions of atoms and molecules
Generator
a device that transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy, typically by electromagnetic induction via Faraday’s Law
