What is an ISP?
An Internet Service Provider supplies a connection to the Internet e.g. Sky Broadband
What is a IP?
A Internet Protocol address, it is used to identify individual devices on a computer network. An IP address consists of 4 numbers with a single dot separating each number . e.g. 10.0.40.105
What is email software?
Widely used method of communication, mainly for business and social purposes. IT can be web-based i.e. Hotmail or installed software such as MS Outlook
What features are common to email software?
- Compose, Reply, Forward
- Delete
- Drafts - a saved copy of an unsent email, usually incomplete
- CC, Carbon Copy allows emails to be sent to others
- BCC, Blind Carbon Copy allows emails to be sent to others without recipients seeing
What is a blog?
Usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries, descriptions of events, or material such as graphics or videos
What are the advantages of a blog?
- You can read other people’s opinion about a topic
- You can share your opinion without having to acknowledge the viewer
What are the disadvantages of a blog?
- The information posted may not be accurate, and just a opinion
- Lots of information so it can be difficult to distinguish the truth from the garbage
What is file transfer?
A standard method for transfer files over the Internet. Typical uses include transferring files to the hosting server, or copy files to a VLE.
What is a social network?
Where friends and friends of friends can socialise. It is mostly aimed at younger generations. They are also sometimes used as professional business tools.
What are the advantages of a social network?
- Keep in touch with friends anywhere in the world
- Great promotion and marketing tool due to high numbers of users world wide
What are the disadvantages of a social network?
- Can provide a platform for internet crime e.g. cyber bullying, fraud, paedophilia
- Security and use of personal data is questionable
What is remote access to computer systems?
Software e.g. Remote Desktop tool on Windows provides a way to connect to computers and networks in different locations.
How does remote access to computer systems work?
- Once logged in, the user has control of the host computer, as if they were controlling it physicaslly
What is an advantage of remote access to computer systems?
- Remote access has enabled people to work from home more easily
