Unit 1.2(a) - The Proteome Flashcards
What is the proteome?
The proteome is the entire set of proteins expressed by a geneome
What are genes that don’t code for proteins called and what is their purpose?
They are called non-coding RNA genes and include those that are transcribed to produce tRNA, rRNA and RNA molecules that control the expression of other genes
What factors affect the set of proteins expressed by a given cell type?
Metabolic activity of cell, cellular stress, the response of signalling molecules and diseased versus healthy cells
Why is the proteome larger than the number of genes?
Its larger than the number of genes because more than one protein can be expressed from the same gene due to alternative RNA splicing
