What is a perspective?
A perspective is how a particular situation is viewed and understood by an individual. It is based on a mix of personal and collective assumptions, values, and beliefs.
It is influenced by sociocultural background, personal experience, and value system. A perspective influences people’s choices and actions.
What are values?
Values are defined as core beliefs or standards that guide human actions and shape attitudes. Values can be viewed as a moral compass, not only at an individual, but also on a societal level.
Can be personal, cultural, economic, environmental, moral, and ethical.
What is a worldview?
A worldview is a comprehensive framework of beliefs and perspectives through which individuals or groups interpret and understand the world around them.
What is an environmental value system (EVS)?
An EVS is a worldview or paradigm that shapes the way an individual or group perceive and evaluate environmental issues.
Inputs: education, culture, economic condition, religion, media, etc.
Outputs: positions, choices, actions
What do Ecocentrics believe?
Ecocentric individuals advocate for:
- the intrinsic value of nature
- biorights
- less materialistic approach to life
- ecology
- importance of education & self restraint
- work with environmental systems to solve problems
What do Technocentrics believe?
Technocentric individuals advocate for:
- solutions to environmental issues through technology & economic growth
- optimistic view of humanity
- pro-growth goals
- security based on scientific and technological expertise
What do Anthropocentrics believe?
Anthropocentric individuals advocate for:
- the intrinsic value of humans
- sustainable development
- preserving biodiversity has economic & ecological benefits
- compensation to those who experience adverse environmental effects
- legal frameworks for environmental protection
