Countable noun
Have plural forms as well as singular forms. Can be regular (horse/horses) or irregular (appendix/appendices)
Noun
Words referring to people, animals, substances (wine), states (death), events and feelings (happiness)
Verb
All sentences have one. Can refer to an action (walk) or a state (be,know)
Transitive verb
A verb that takes an object
She bought a book
Intransitive verb
A verb that doesn’t take an object (we danced)
Copula
Connects a subject to a complement (be, look, feel, taste, seem, become)
Stative verb
Describes a state
Mary HAS a headache
Auxiliary
Not the content/meaning or main verb.
1) used to make sentences negative(we DIDN’T like the movie)
2) to make questions (DO you drink wine?)
3) to make verb tenses(She IS singing)
Modal
Verbs used to express ideas such as 1)possibility (might, may, could) 2)intention (will) 3)obligation (should,must). Are followed by the bare infinitive (We MUST LEAVE)
Phrasal Verb
Verb plus particle combinations that form one unit of meaning; can be comprised of two words, a verb plus a particle (give up, run into) or three words, a verb and particle followed by a preposition (drop out of)
Infinitive
Verb that shows no marking for person, tense or aspect. Usually used with to (Kelly wants TO LEAVE).
Bare infinitive
Occurs without to (We may leave)
Gerund
Verb plus ing, functions as a noun (San dislikes studying)
Adjective
A word that modifies a noun, describes quality, state or action that a noun refers to.
Attributive
Adjectives that come before nouns (the MAIN idea)
Predicative
Adjectives that come after a copula verb (the baby is ASLEEP)
Comparative
Form of adjective used to compare two things; short adjectives add -we, long adjectives use more in front of the adjective.
Superlative
Form of adjective (or adverb) showing which thing has a quality above the level of others (the_____+est for short adjectives, the most_____for long adjectives
Past participle
An adjective derived from a verb form (ed for regular verbs) used in some verb tenses (the EXCITED children)
Present participle
An adjective derived from the ing form of a verb (a BORING class)
Adverb
Word that can modify a verb (speak LOUDLY), an adjective (QUITE smart), or another adverb (REALLY well)
Manner adverb
Describes the way an action is done. They ran QUICKLY
Place or location adverb
Shows where the action is done (they shop LOCALLY)
Time adverb
Show when an action is done, duration, or frequency (She left YESTERDAY)
