Unit 10: Gravity and Tides Flashcards
The orbits of the planets around the sun and the moon around Earth is due to the force of _____
Gravity
Who came up with the law of Universal gravitation?
Sir Issac Newton.
Which scientist theorized that objects curve towards one anther because of the disturbances in space and time?
Albert Einstien
Which 2 factors affect the gravitational pull between objects?
Mass of Objects and Distance between Objects
Our solar system started from a ________, which is a cloud of _________ and ________.
Nebula, Gas and Dust
What are the 4 planets that were formed from light gasses? (also called Jovian Planets, has more mass and less density!)
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune
What are the 4 planets that were formed from Rocky Material? (Terrestrial Planets, has less mass and more density!)
Mercury, venus, Earth and Mars
The rocky material of the 4 inner planets also gives them a higher _____ than the 4 outer gassy planets.
Density
What is a possible explanation for why Jupiter has more moons than Saturn?
Because Jupiter has larger mass than Saturn so it will have a larger gravitational force.
In at least 3 steps, explain the formation of our solar system.
The region of Solar Nebula collapsed, and gravity pulled most of the mass toward the center of the Nebula. Nebula contracted and began rotating with increasing speed to make and disk which was flattened. This was called the Protostellar disk which created our sun. As the disk continued to contract, the matter ended up in the center of the disk as well as friction fell in, heating it up to millions of degrees, creating the fusion of Hydrogen and Helium atoms. With the formation of the sun, the sun and dusk debris collided, creating a larger body that collided with other larger bodies to make a planetesmentials. This created planets. **The protostellar disk became the Protoplanetary disk in which planets formed.
the _______ of hydrogen and helium is a process involved in the creation of stars.
Fusion
What is a high tide?
Occurs when water reaches its highest level in a day.
What is a low tide?
Occurs when water reaches its lowest level in a day.
What’s a spring tide?
Moon, sun, and Earth are in a straight line, causing gravitational pulls to cause very high and low tides. This has the greatest tidal range.
What’s a neap tide?
Moon, Sun, and Earth are at a right angle formation, causing gravitational pull to cause very weak high tides and low tides. It has the weakest tidal range.
