Veracity
The principle of truth telling; patients should receive the truth about his or her condition and the proposed treatment, with the information presented in a manner that is understandable to the patient
Autonomy
Based on that we are self-aware, capable of moral thought and reasoning, and self-determining; patients must be treated in a way that respects their autonomy and their ability to express their wishes and make informed choices about their treatment
Nonmaleficence
We should act in ways that avoid harm to others, including the risk if harm
Beneficence
Obligation to do good by acting in ways that promote the welfare and best interests of others
Justice
Concerned with treating people equitably, fairly, and appropriately; provide patients care and treatment that does not arbitrarily discriminate against them as an individual or as a members of a class of individuals
Fidelity
Act in ways that are loyal; keeping promises, doing what is expected, performing duties, being trustworthy
EMTALA
Emergency medical treatment and active labor act requires that any hospital that operates an ED and receives Medicare funds provide an appropriate screening and stabilize any emergency medical condition
PSDA
Patient self-determination act: required to give patients information regarding advance directives and advise patients if their right to participate in their medical decisions and to document in the medical record whether or not a patient has advance directives
HIPAA
Health insurance portability and accountability act: provides broad health insurance privacy requirements with which all the businesses of health care must content
Practice acts
establish the requirements necessary to obtain a license and the scoping practice for those oh that license
Consent laws
Patients have a right I be involved in decisions about their health care
What does informed consent include
A description of the procedure, explanation of the risks and benefits, discussion of any alternatives to the proposed procedure
