Unit 10 Flashcards
1
Q
Cohesin
A
- Hold together condensed chromosomes
2
Q
Centromere
A
- Attached to sister chromosomes before they separate during mitosis
3
Q
Kinetochore
A
- At centromere
- Attachment point for microtubules
4
Q
Kinetochore microtubules
A
- Attached to mitotic / condensed chromosomes at the centromeres via kinetochores
- Play critical role in separation of mitotic chromosomes
- Dissassemble but remain attached to chromosomes, pulling chromatids to opposite spindle poles
5
Q
Interpolar microtubules
A
- Not attached to chromosomes & overlap, are stabilised by proteins called spindle kinesis
6
Q
- Aster microtubules
A
- Extend outward from centrosomes to cell periphery & have freely exposed (+) ends
- Pulled toward cell periphery by dynein, anchored to plasma membrane. Also pulls spindle poles further apart
7
Q
Spindle kinesins
A
- Of interpolar microtubules generate a sliding force to push microtubules apart. Forces spindle poles apart
