A title assigned to Jesus of Nazareth by his followers. It comes from the Greek word for anointed one and is a translation from the Hebrew word messiah. In the ancient world, anointing was a sign of kingship and holiness. In Jesus, the disciples recognised the Messiah, or saviour, who had been promised to Israel in the Hebrew Scriptures
