Unit 1 Vocabulary Flashcards
Cells
The most basic unit of life
Cell Membrane
Controls what comes into and out a cell found in booth plant and animal cells
Cell Wall
The ridged outer layer of a plant cell
Chloroplast
Captures energy from the sun and uses it to produce food for plant cells
Chromatin
Tiny strands inside the nucleus that contain the instructions for directing the cell’s functions
Cytoplasm
Gel-like substance where cell organelles are found
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of a cell to another
Golgi Bodies
Receive proteins and materials from the ER, packages and distributes them
Lysosomes
Use chemicals to break down food and worn out cell parts
Nucleolus
found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes
Nucleus
Contains DNA, which controls the functions of the cell (control center of the cell)
Mitochondria
Produces energy a cell needs to carry out its functions (powerhouse of the cell)
Ribosomes
Assembles amino acids to create proteins
Vacuoles
Stores food, water, waste, and other materials
