Who is the antagonist?
The character whom the protagonist struggles against.

What is conflict?
The problem or struggle between/among opposing forces of characters.
What is individual versus society?
The struggle of an individual against a group.
What is the resolution?
The conclusion of the story; main/central conflict is worked out.
What is a character?
A person or animal that takes part in the action of a literary work.
What is static character?
A character that remains the same no matter the situation.
What is a dynamic character?
A character that changes during the course of and as a result of the story.
What is a round character?
A fully developed character exhibiting many traits, faults and virtues.
What is a flat character?
A one sided character; often displaying a stereotype.
What is a stereotype?
A generalization for a group of people.
What is a flashback?
An interruption in the plot which transports the readers attention to an earlier time to introduce previously occurred events.
What is individual versus technology?
A struggle that puts an individual against a machine or technological force.
What is individual versus supernatural?
Struggle that puts an individual against a supernatural or paranormal force.
What is individual versus nature?
A struggle that puts an individual against forces of nature.
What is the climax.
The turning point of the main/central conflict; moment of highest tension.
What is purpose?
The authors reason for writing.
What is falling action?
Sequence of events after the turning point where the point where the story begins to wind down; leading to the resolution.
What is the exposition?
The section of the story near the beginning that introduces characters, setting and background.
What is mood?
The emotional feeling an author creates in a reader.
What is individual versus self?
A struggle or problem that exists in a character’s mind.
What is rising action?
A series of events that increases the tension of the conflict and builds the initiating event to the climax.
What are context clues?
“Helping” words or phrases students can use to understand unfamiliar words.
What is plot?
The sequence of events in a literary work; what happens in the story.
What is a summary?
A restatement of the main points with only the important details.

A struggle or problem between two characters.
What is an inference?
Using prior knowledge and textual information to draw conclusions.
What is theme?
The central message or concern in a literary work.
What is the tone?
The attitude the author has towards a subject or character.
What is the setting?
The time, place and duration of the story.

Struggle between character and outside force.
What is the initiating event?
The incident that triggers the main/central conflict of the story.
