Unit 1 Vocabulary Flashcards
Physical Change
A change to a sample of matter in which physical properties of the material change, but the identity of matter does not change.
Chemical Change
Change that produces matter with a different chemical composition.
Physical Property
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance.
Chemical Property
The ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change.
Extensive Property
A property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample.
Intensive property
A property of matter that depends only on the type of matter in a sample and not on the amount.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the Composition is not uniform throughout the mixture.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which the Composition is uniform throughout the mixture.
Unit Conversion Factor
A number used to change one set of units to another, by multiplying or dividing.
Dimensional Analysis
A technique that uses the units (Dimensions) of the measurement in order to correctly solve problems.
Substance (Pure Substance)
Matter that has a uniform and definite Composition.
Accuracy
Measure of how close a measurement is to the correct or accepted value of the quantity being measured.
Precision
The measure of how close a series of measurements are to one another
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances in any porportion
Compound
A substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion.
