Statistics
The science of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data
population
the entire collection of individuals or objects about which information is desired
census
performed to gather information about the entire population
sample
a subset of the population randomly selected for study in a defined manners
descriptive statistics
the methods of organizing and summarizing data (graphing, averaging, and etc.)
inferential statistics
involves making generalizations from a sample to a population
variable
any characteristic that may change from one individual to another
data
the actual characteristics you collected from your sample or population
categorical variable AKA qualitative
data sorted into categories that have no meaningful numerical value
numerical variable AKA quantitative
observations or measurements that take on meaningful numerical values; makes sense to average the numbers
continuous numerical variable
data can take on any value in the domain of the variable; usually measurement of something
univariate
data that describes one characteristics of the population
bivariate
data that describes two characteristics of the population
multivariate
data that describes 3 or more characteristics of the population
discrete numerical variable
data that can only take on specific values in the domain of the variable; usually counts of items
