What is Characterization?
the creation or construction of a fictional character. Direct is when the author tells you and indirect is when the author hints at it/you have to find out yourself.
What is Plot?
the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence.
What is Tone?
the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, situation.
What is Theme?
is the main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work.
What is Author’s Purpose?
his reason for or intent in writing.
What is Voice?
the individual style of writing. There are many techniques to this.
What is Diction?
The choice of words and style or manner of an expression determined by the author.
What is Culture?
refers to the beliefs, customs, values, and activities of a particular group of people at a particular time.
What is Mood?
the overall feeling or atmosphere of the work. the emotion the author strives to evoke in the reader.
What is Audience?
who the author writes their piece for, which is us the readers.
What is Diversity?
includes the various facets of sexuality and gender, cultural, and societal groups.
What is Point of View?
the narrator’s position in relation to a story being told.
What is Setting?
the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.
What is Syntax?
the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language.
What is Foil?
a foil is a character who contrasts with another character; typically, a character who contrasts with the protagonist, in order to better highlight or differentiate certain qualities of the protagonist.
