Unit 1 Vocab - Biology Flashcards
Inference
A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know.
Observation
The act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way.
Hypothesis
A scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested in ways that support or reject it.
Controlled experiment
An experiment where an experimental group is compared with a control group or reject it.
Independent variable (IV)
The variable that is varied or manipulated by the researcher.
Dependent variable (DV)
The variable that is measured in an experiment (in response to IV).
Control group
A group in an experiment that is taken through the entire experiment except the presence of the independent variable.
Data
Recorded observations.
Theory
An explanation that is broad in scope, generates new hypothesis, and is supported by a large body of evidence.
Bias
A personal viewpoint or preference rather than scientific.
Biology
The scientific study life.
Model
A representation of a theory or process; it can take many forms, including diagrams, graphs, 3D objects, computer programs, or mathematical equations.
Inductive reasoning
A type of logic in which generalizations are based on a large number of specific observations.
Deductive reasoning
A type of logic in which specific results are predicted from a general premise.
Quantitative observation
Observational data gatherer using measurement tools and recorded as a number.
