Sociologist who developed a social theory about suicide and studied an Australian tribe; came up with “anomie”
Auguste Comte
French sociologist who wanted to restructure France’s society; coined the term “sociology”
Harriet Martineau
A feminist sociologist who translated Comte’s writings; wrote the first book on sociological methods
Herbert Spencer
A sociologist who wanted to simply understand society, not change it; believed it is natural for some to be rich and some poor
Anomie
The loss of direction in a society when social control of individual behavior has become ineffective
Max Weber
A German sociologist who came up with “verstehen” and the ideal type
Verstehen
A German word meaning insight/understanding; means understanding how the subjects view things

A construct or model for evaluating specific cases
Karl Marx
A critical sociologist who studied how those in power maintained power over the lower class; wrote the Communist Manifesto with Friedrich Engels
W.E.B. DuBois
A Black sociologist who focused on race and advocated for civil rights; came up with the term “double consciousness”
Double consciousness
The division of an individual’s identity into two or more social realities (ex: the experience of being Black in white America)

Sociologist who studied small units and groups
Jane Addams
Sociologist who helped found a settlement house in Chicago; with Ida B. Wells, prevented racial segregation in Chicago public schools; established a juvenile court system and women’s trade union
