Natural Rights
Rights people are born with and can not be taken away from them
Popular Sovereignty
The power to govern is in the hands of the people
Social Contract
People give away some of the power to govern so the government can do there job
Republicanism
The people elect leaders to represent them in the government
Limited Government
A government that prevents tyranny through a system of checks and balances and the distribution of power.
Participatory
Almost all members of society get a say in the political process.
Pluralist
People are associated with interest groups that compete to influence policies.
Elite
The most educated and wealthy people run the government and decided on policies
Factions
Groups of people that believe there interest is more important than any other interest
Great Compromise
:A compromise on how people would represented in congress
- Virginia Plan: Done by population
- New Jersey Plan: Represented equally
This created a bicameral legislature making it so the house of representatives was done by population and the senate was done equally so each state had 2 members.
Electoral College
Each state is given a certain number of electors that correspond to the number of representatives they have in the house. They are chosen by state legislatures.
3/5 compromise
⅗ of the enslaved population would count towards representation.
Importation of Slaves
Congress couldn’t touch the slave trade until 20 years after the Constitution was ratify.
