FAS
AKA Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
- Lifelong condition
- Babies have abnormally small heads, small hearts, vision & hearing problems, small spines, etc.
- Only way to 100% prevent it is to not drink alcohol
NAS
AKA Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome
- Group of symptoms baby experiences while going through withdrawal
Maternity Leave
Time mom gets off for her baby (12 weeks required for unpaid, no weeks required for paid; US is the only developed country without mandated maternity leave)
Paternity Leave
Time dad gets off for his baby (no weeks required in US)
Physical Needs
- Do you have enough space?
- Do you have everything for a baby (crib, diapers, etc.)?
- Transportation?
Emotional Needs
- Pregnant mothers have severe mood swings because of hormones
- Father’s reactions can be unexpected and/or emotional
- Relationships will change with a baby (some will end -get alone time, make friends with other parents, etc. to prevent this)
- Have the baby for the right reasons
Financial Needs
- Children are expensive (daycare, some parents don’t want to/can’t work a full-time job, children are expensive for 18+ years, etc.)
- Pay off as much debt as you can before getting pregnant/having a baby
- Build up a nest egg in case something unexpected happens
- Look at maternity and paternity leave
Nest Egg
Enough money to cover rent, utilities, medical, food, etc. for 3-6 months in case something unexpected happens
Marijuana
- Can stress baby out
- Same harmful effects as illegal drugs
- Exposes baby to risks related to smoking (premature birth, low birth weight, etc.)
Smoking/Nicotine/Carbon Monoxide
- Can cause premature birth, low birth weight, increase risk of SIDS
- Nicotine & carbon monoxide deprive baby of oxygen
Medication and Pregnancy
- Many common medicines taken by mom for depression, migraines, seizures, and more can have negative effects on baby
- Mothers might have to stop taking their medicines while pregnant and breastfeeding to protect their baby
Stereotypes
Teen moms are:
- bad moms
- live in poverty/need government assistance
- single moms
- high school dropouts
- irresponsible
Teen Pregnancy - what age?
- Ages 15-19
- Lots of stereotypes associated with it
- Children are statistically higher to live in poverty, become teen parents, etc.
- Less teen pregnancy now (better access to BC & sex education)
- Teen pregnancy is expensive y
