Theism
- Greek theos meaning “god”
- means any general belief in the existence of God(s)
Atheism
Belief there is no God
Agnosticism
Belief that we do not know or cannot know if there is a God
(Gnosis= knowledge, A= no knowledge or one cannot know)
Nontheism
God is not relevant to a religious practice; God’s existence does not matter
(Non= not)
Polytheism
Many gods, more than one god
Pantheism
God is all, everything is God
All the things in the universe make up God, and nothing else is god
(The world is God)
Animism
(Subset of pantheism)
Everything has its own “spirit” animated by the Ultimate Reality (God); objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence
Panentheism
God is IN everything, permeates all things, but is also a separate being
(Catholic)
Monotheism
One god
Trinitarian
Three persons in ONE God
(Christianity: father, son, Holy Spirit)
Monism
Everything is ONE
(One-ism; there is only one thing, one essence)
Doctrine/Creed
Statement or belief, how the religion sees or views the world, people, etc, what it believes in, what it holds as true
Ethics/code
Morals, guides of how to act, rules of right or wrong
Ritual/cult
Worship practices, liturgy, rites, shared worship, formal prayer
Social/community
Refers to the people who believe, and also the history of the group, the church of believers or members, the organization that holds these people together
