Unit 1: Tissues Flashcards
Tissue
A group of cells that are similar in structure and specialisation that work together to carry out a particular task/function.
Types of tissue
- Epithelial
- Muscular
- Connective
- Nervous
Epithelial tissue
A covering or lining tissue.
* Organs including the heart, kidneys, intestines, liver, lungs, and skin are covered in epithelial tissue (on the outside).
* It also lines the inside of organs, so the inner layer of hollow organs (including the heart, stomach, and intestines) is made up of epithelium.
* The cells that make up epithelium fit very closely together, forming a smooth surface.
Connective tissue
Provides support for the body and helps to hold all the body parts together.
* Cells are not close together like epithelium. They are separated by non-cellular material called matrix.
* Includes bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and fat storage (adipose).
* Blood is sometimes considered as connective tissue (the matrix is the liquid in which it is suspended).
Muscular tissue
Describe and list the different types
- Muscle fibres (the cells of muscular tissue) are long and thin and can contract to become shorter.
- Skeletal muscle
- Smooth muscle
- Cardiac muscle
Skeletal muscle
Makes up the muscles attached to bones
* We have voluntary control over these muscles - they are also called ‘voluntary muscle’
* They have stripes, so are also known as ‘striated muscle’
