English Votes for English Laws (EVEL) – Introduced a ‘Grand Committee’ stage to give English MPs a greater say on England-only laws.
EU Referendum (2016) – Held on 23rd June, resulting in a 52%-48% vote to leave the EU.
Scotland Act (2016) – Gave Scotland greater tax-raising powers and required a referendum for abolishing the Scottish Parliament or Government.
Wales Act (2017) – Gave tax-raising powers to the Welsh Assembly.
Theresa May’s Government (July 2016 – July 2019)
European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Act (2017) – Triggered Article 50, starting the Brexit process.
European Union (Withdrawal) Act (2018) – Legally confirmed the UK’s exit from the EU.
Little other constitutional reform due to Brexit focus.
Boris Johnson’s Government (July 2019 – Present)
EU Withdrawal Agreement Act (2020) – UK formally left the EU on 31st January 2020.
Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act (2022) – Repealed the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act.
Judicial Review and Courts Act (2022) – Limited the powers of judicial review.
Proposed Human Rights Act Reform (2021) – Government announced plans to amend rights concerning foreign offenders and the ‘right to a family life’.
