Unit 1 Terms Flashcards
Acceleration
The rate of change in velocity
Acceleration due to gravity
The Acceleration of a freely falling object in the absence of air resistance, which near the earth’s surface is approximately 10 m/s^2
Acceleration-Time Graph
Plot the Acceleration as a function of time
Average Acceleration
Acceleration of an object measured over a given time interval
Average velocity
The Velocity of an object measured over a time interval; the displacement of an object divided by the change in time during the motion
Constant Acceleration
Acceleration which does not change during a time interval
Constant Velocity
Velocity which does not change during a time interval
Displacement
Change in position in a particular direction
Dynamics
Deals with why objects move as they do
Distance
The length moved between two points (scalar)
Free Fall
Motion under the influence of gravity
Initial velocity
The velocity at which an object starts at the beginning of a time interval
Instantaneous
Value of a quantity at a particular instant of time, such as the instantaneous position, velocity, or acceleration
Kinematics
The study of how motion occurs including distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, and time
Mechanics
The study of objects, and the related concepts of force and energy
Particle Model
Describes a moving object without reference to its size
Position-Timne Graph
The graph of the motion of an object that shows how its position varies with time
Speed
The ratio of distance to time
Terminal velocity
The constant velocity of an object that is reached when the drag force equals the force of gravity
Translational Motion
Objects that move without rotating
Velocity
Ration of the displacement of an object to a time interval
Velocity-time graph
Plot of the velocity of an object as a function of time, the slope of it is acceleration and the integral is displacement
Vector
Arrow with magnitude and direction like displacement and speed
Scalar
Value with magnitude but without direction like distance and speed
