Unit 1 Tech And Envir Transformations Intro Flashcards
Demography
Describes a people or population by spatial organization- location of people, events, places, and connections between places and landscapes
Intervening obstacles
Physical features of the geography or landscape that slow or stop people from migrating from one place to another.
“Marker events”
Events that change the course of history- difficult to identify accurately in Paleolithic times through early civilizations- 8000 bce- 600 bce because interactions between human groups are limited so change in locations happens at different times.
Technological and environmental transformations time period.
Agricultural development and early Ag communities (8000 bce -3500 bce. Earliest civilizations (3500 bce- 600 bce).
Migrations
Local, regional, and global permanent moves of a population to new locations. Many reasons, most voluntary migrations have economic reasons.
The Myth of the Continents
Book by Martin W Lewis and Karen E Wigen that says looking at our common notions, or “frameworks”- like the spatial assumption that the earth land masses should be divided into continents- is important to how we perceive human community and history- is not complex enough to develop a sophisticated geographical understanding.
Periodization
Division of history into time periods
Perspective
Point of view
Push and pull factors
Factors that affect migration- push factor encourages people to migrate to another location from their current location, and a pull factor attracts migrating people’s to a new location.
Cultural diffusion
Spread of cultures with population movement across new areas- ex. Innovations, technology, religion, language, food/clothing styles, disease.
