A

Missouri being a slave state applied to the union, balanced against the north; in 1820 a compromise was worked out. To balance the admittance of missouri, new free state of Maine was created, also agreed that from now on, there would be no slavery in Lousiana purchase territory north of latitude 36^30 south of the line.
