Unit 1: Section A Flashcards
Natural Hazards, Tectonic Hazards, Weather Hazards & Climate Change
What is a natural hazard?
-A natural event that can cause damage to people and property.
What are the types of natural hazards?
-Geological(caused by tectonic processes)
-Meteorological(caused by weather/climate)
What are some factors affecting hazard risk?
-vunlerability=the more people in areas exposed to natural hazards, the greater chance of them being affected.
-capacity to cope=the better a population can cope, the lower the threat.
-Nature of the natural hazard(type, frequency and magnitude).
What are tectonic plates?
-Earth’s surface is split into slabs called tectonic plates(either oceanic or continental).
-These plates are moving because of convection currents below the mantle.
What are the 4 types of plate boundaries?
-Destructive
-Constructive
-Collision
-Conservative
What is a plate margin?
-The place where plates meet.
What are the 4 types of plate boundaries?
-Destructive
-Constructive
-Collision
-Conservative
What is a destructive plate boundary?
-when an oceanic and continental plate move towards eachother, the oceanic plate subducts under the continental since it’s dense.
-the oceanic plate beings to melt, forming magma
What is a constructive plate boundary?
-When 2 plates move away from eachother
What is a collision plate boundary?
What is a conservative plate boundary?
