Unit 1: Scientific Method + Meaning of Living Flashcards
Characteristics of Living Things
1) Made up of cells
- uni-cellular = bacteria,
- multi-cellular = humans, plants, animals)
2) Has genetic code (DNA)
3) Reproduces
- sexual reproduction - cells from 2 parents unite to form the first cell of a new organism
- asexual reproduction - a single organism produces offspring identical to itself
4) Metabolizes - intakes energy + materials necessary for growth, development, + reproduction
5) Grows + Develops
6) Responds to stimuli (signals) from their environment
7) Maintains a stable internal environment (performs homeostasis)
8) Changes overtime (evolves)
Abiotic + Biotic
Biotic - living
Abiotic - non-living
Dependent Variable
What is being measured (depends and changes in response to the independent variable)
Independent Variable
Variable being changed/ tested
Control (s)
-group exposed to the same conditions as experimental but is treated differently
-used as comparison group
Constants
Factors of a experiment that do NOT change and are the same for ALL experimental set-ups.
Necessary Components of Data Table
- includes units
- IV on left
- DV on right
