Unit 1 Science Test on the Metric System, etc Flashcards
Metric System
Decimal measuring systems based on the meter, liter, gram, second, and degree as units of length, capacity (volume), mass, time, and temperature. It builds units using a basic unit and a set of prefixes
Length:
Meter
Volume:
Mass
Mass:
Gram
Time:
Second
Temperature:
Celsius
What is the letter(s) that stand for the following words:
Kilo: Hecto: Deka: Centi: Milli
K H Da C M
Extra note on the metric system:
Large and small metric units are formed by linking a BASIC UNIT with a PREFIX. For example, linking the prefix kilo- to the basic unit meter gives you the kilometer, which means 1,000 meters. Similarly linking this prefix milli- to the basic unit liter gives you milliliter which means 0.001 (one thousandth) of a liter.
What does kilo- mean?
1,000 (one thousand)
What does hecto- mean?
100 (one hundred)
What does deka- mean?
10 (ten)
What does deci- mean?
0.1 (one tenth)
What does centi- mean?
0.01 (one hundredth)
What does milli- mean?
0.001 (one thousandth)
What is the ladder method?
A method where you start at one point and jump up or down to a different unit, converting it to a different unit.
Ex. 4km=4,000 m
To the right the number gets larger while to the left the number gets smaller.
The number of jumps, is how many times you move the decimal point to the left or right.
What are the steps in the ladder method?
1st-Determine your starting point
2nd-Count the “jumps” to your ending point
3rd-Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction
What is three possible options for the basic unit?
Meter, Liter, and Gram
