unit 1 sac 1 Flashcards
major muscles and joints
what are ligaments, tendons and cartilage?
ligaments- connect bones to other bones
tendons = connect muscle to bone
cartilage= provides a protective, shock absorbing gell between joints.
what are the functions of the skeletal system?
-protection of vital internal organs- such as the brain, (skull), spinal cord, (vertebral column)
-support and posture
storage of fuels, fats and minerals
What are the three planes of movement?
transverse (half of the body, superior and inferior)
frontal ( divides into anterior and prosterior)
sagital (left and right sections)
how many bones are in the human body?
206
What are axial bones?
supports and protects the bodies internal organs and provides an attachment site for other bones and muscles.
What are appendicular bones?
responsible for making movement, permitting locomotion and giving us the ability to grasp. and manipulate objects.
example of axial bones
cranuim, vertabral column, rib cage
examples of appendicular bones
femur, fibular, ulna, scapula
what are the 5 types of bones plus an example.
short bones(, long bones(humerus, femur), sesamoid bones(patella), flat bones(scapular, ribs), irregular bones(vertebrae, illium).
what are the three types of joints?
fixed or fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial.
synovial joint amount of movement and examples
free, hip+knee
fixed or fibrous amount of movement and examples
none, skull+pelvis
cartilaginous amount of movement and examples
slight, ribs attaching to the sternum+lumbar
what are the 6 types of synovial joints?
pivot, gliding,ball&socket, hinge, saddle,condyloid
example of pivot joints
atlas +axis
example of gliding joints
carpals/tarsals
examples of ball n socket joints
shoulder, hip
examples of hinge joints
knee, elbow
example of saddle joints
carpo-metacarpal joint of thumb
example of condyloid joint
wrist
what is a uniaxial joint?
a joint that allows movement in one plane only, such as back and forth.
what is a biaxial joint?
a joint with two axes of movement, such as side to side + back and forth.
what is supination?
palm open
what is pronation?
palm down
