Citizenship
What is a citizen?
individual with certain rights and duties under a government who, by birth or by choice, owes allegiance to that government.
What amendment defines citizenship?
14th Amendment
What must a citizen do?
For the government to be effective, citizens must fulfill their civic duties. Citizens who choose not to fulfill these civic duties face legal consequences.
What are the 4 ways someone can be a US citizen?
Born in the US, born in US territory, born anywhere as long as one parent is a citizen, naturalized
What are the 6 requirements/steps to the naturalization process?
Be 18, a legal resident of US for 3-5 years, be a good person for the US, pay a fine, pass a naturalization test, take the oath of allegiance at a naturalization ceremony
What are the 6 civic duties?
Obey all laws, pay taxes, serve in the armed forces if called, serve on a jury when summoned, serve as a witness when summoned, get an education
What is the definition of a civic responsibility?
To contribute to the common good-civic responsibilities are fulfilled by choice
What are the 7 civic responsibilities?
register and vote, hold elective office, communicate with government officials, stay informed regarding current issues, respect each other’s right to an equal voice in government, participate in political campaigns, serve in voluntary government appointed positions
How can citizens participate in a democratic society?
A democratic society requires for active participation of its citizens.
What are ways for citizens to participate in Community Service?
- Express concern about the welfare of the community as a whole
- As related to the environment, Public Health and Safety, Education, Volunteer and help to make the community a good place to work and live
- By becoming involved with public service organizations, tutoring, volunteering in nursing homes
What freedoms are established in the US Constitution?
The Constitution of the United States establishes and protects the citizens’ fundamental rights and liberties. Few rights, if any, are considered absolute.
What is the First Amendment freedoms?
Speech, press, assembly, petition, religion (S.P.R.A.P.)
What is the Fifth Amendment?
Protects citizens from being held for committing a crime unless they have been charged by the police. It also guarantees due process, which means that the state and the country have to respect a citizen’s legal rights.
What is the Fourteenth Amendment?
Declares no state may deprive persons born or naturalized in the United States equal protection of the laws.
